I’ve been thinking about some ideas to help promote local developers and programmers here in Fresno and getting to know others.  One idea I really liked and experienced once was Startup Drinks San Francisco, which was really fun.  I was new to the city and I got to meet with lots of developers for some great startups based in the city.  So why not here in Fresno?  This would be a great opportunity to network and have a drink with other bright minds.

Also another idea could be Nerd Dinner.  This is a similar idea except to have some dinner and chit-chat as opposed to getting slightly tipsy.

I’d like to know your suggestions if you have any.

This is a great idea. We (the folks at the Business Incubator) have been trying to think of a way (or ways) to get entrepreneurs (primarily tech folks) out of the woodwork. Keep me posted as I’d like to help you promote this activity.

Drinks. Loosen those introverted tongues. :)

Sure thing, I will try to make it to the next incubator too. We’ve passed each other a few times at the blenders but never spoke I usually don’t stay that long.

I was hoping someone would put on a nerd dinner. Yes. There are developers here in Fresno here and there. They’re just harder to herd than cats.

I am so down. I’m kinda a programmer. Look..

FunTime = SELECT beers, buds, food FROM Anywhere where (Anywhere.Price = ‘free’ or Anywhere.Price = ‘cheap’)
While Not FunTime EOF
Jason = ‘TearThatShitUp’
FunTime.MoveNext

I’m with Travis. I say focus it on the local scene for tech startups and biz ideas. At least for the first pass. Leave programming and design meetings for another time & place (like http://www.centralcaldotnet.com/ or http://fresnodesignalliance.ning.com/), though those are necessary too.

As for locale, a place for drinks sounds good. There’s always appetizers if not a full blown dinner. Somewhere that’s not too loud or crowded and people feel comfortable moving around and mingling (the whole point right?).

I would be down, I am a web designer and front end guy, but I love talking code over drinks or dinner or both.

All code … all the time. Name the time and the place. Keep it loose. Maybe a Twitter acct to broadcast and follow, e.g. @fresnonerds, @techfresno, whatever.

Patio at Daily Grill for happy hour(s)?

Layne added these pithy words on Aug 20 09 at 6:37 am

I heard they have a pretty good happy hour, plus it’s near (my) work and haven’t been there yet.

@techfresno created on Twitter. Sign in an shout out. I realize community ownership of a Twitter account isn’t orthodox, but what the heck. Pwd is (no spaces or punctuation): f.r es.none. rds

Follow it, own it. Shout out a time and a place and see who’s there.

I’m in. I prefer online content strategy, but end up programming a lot. And by programming, I mean relying heavily on opensource technology.

Wow, great initial response turnout. I will try to get a hold of Travis and see if/when/how we can work out an initial meetup to get us all out to meet each other and discuss ideas.

I’m totally in for a happy hour or something. Great idea on the @techfresno account. Can we get updated via that?

Steve Loveless added these pithy words on Aug 21 09 at 9:46 am

Definitely interested in this. Anything to get the ball rolling.

Rob Fahrni added these pithy words on Aug 21 09 at 1:23 pm

I’m definitely in for a Nerd Dinner, although I’m not sure about Happy Hour, as I have to drive back to Visalia afterward. :)

Christopher Hawkins added these pithy words on Aug 21 09 at 2:00 pm

Chris,

We can carpool, get Cass to drive. ;-)

Rob Fahrni added these pithy words on Aug 22 09 at 6:53 am

I would be interested in this as well. Do we have location and date yet?

Hey guys just a quick update. I sent this idea in more detail to Travis Sheridan and he’s got the ball rolling on organizing an event already, and either I or him will post more details stay tuned.
