I’ve complained about this before. One of my ways of trying to “give back” here in Fresno is to start riding the bus. For me it is optimal because I only spend about 3 minutes total walking to and from the stop since where I live and my job is so close. But that is not where the problem lies.
You see, when someone rides the bus they tend to want to arrive on time. So if I go to the Fresno Area Exchange (FAX) website and the schedule says the bus arrives at :15 and :45 after the hour the bus should arrive at this time. In every other major city I have ever been to it works this way. When I went to Switzerland for three months it worked this way.
Well in Fresno it doesn’t work this way.
You see, every morning when I ride the bus I try to catch it at 9:15AM. The other morning my bus never arrived until 9:35AM. What gives? Well many other people always ask this question every morning when the bus is late at random times. This particular morning the drivers excuse was “this bus is slow.” Give me a break.
The general attitude I tend to detect from almost all FAX drivers is that they are doing us a favor. By me trying to give back to my city and paying their salary, they act like they are doing me a favor by even giving me a ride. I’m sorry but this is not the case. It is a two way street. By me paying you money, you are paying me by getting to my destination. The attitude with many bus drivers tends to be overly negative and non-confrontational and I don’t understand how the city tolerates it. It’s almost as if I feel I’m having to deal with employees at the DMV.
That’s not to say some of the drivers do arrive on time. The reason I know this is if I take the 8:45AM bus it is the same driver most of the time and he’s very courteous. But shouldn’t this be how it always is? How are you doing people a favor when they need to be at work or at interviews at a specific time? It seems the city really doesn’t care. Some people actually do have to be at work at a set time. Or others have doctor appointments they need to be to and cannot be late.
I thought about it all week and came up with some suggestions I think could help the city embrace their local riders. Especially since more people are trying to take the bus to save gas, go green or whatever you want to call it and not be restricted to only low income folks anymore.
Provide Real-Time Data
In other metropolitan areas, you can actually get real time information on transit routes from many sources online. Check out Google Maps in the San Francisco area and you will see how transit information is already integrated nicely with arrival and departure times. You can also get many iPhone applications that also do this.
So why hasn’t Fresno? I’ve heard rumors that some bus transit systems have strict control over their route data and don’t want to open it up and expose it. This is major fail and is just another example of companies and/or governments not embracing the people who need it. I hope Fresno embraces this one day and opens up their data. This also could present some great opportunities for local companies as well.
Get Rid of the Mandatory Breaks
This is what really irks me riding the bus in Fresno and a lot of other people as well. It’s just baffling. If you have ever rode the bus you may have noticed that randomly at some stops the bus driver will stop, get out and go into a fast food restaurant or store and get something to eat. They then will come back, eat the food there while the bus is idling and make everyone wait until they are done. This usually lasts about 15 minutes.
Does this make any sense to you?
I understand that all employees regardless of what field they work in require breaks, but there are optimal ways to go about it. For example if I was ordering food at a restaurant and right before I went to give them money the cashier says:
“Hold on sir, I have to go on break.”
And sits there for 15 minutes not allowing another cashier to continue my purchase or order. Doesn’t this seem wrong to you? To me it does, and it seems actually pretty stupid. Every other company where services is provided understand how to treat the customer, us riders, as top priority.
Each route has a beginning and end of the route. In between or at the end, why can’t schedules be correctly defined that another driver would take over while the current driver takes their lunch or break? I mean logically this makes so much sense. Why do the paying customers have to pay for the fact the drivers causes people to be late to their destination?
I think if the FAX bus system fixes or addresses these two issues the bus route will be a much better and efficient system. I am sure there are more things that can be done to improve it but these seem like steps in the right direction to me.
For now I will attempt to continue utilizing a failing system for the sake of saving gas.

Stacy Lang added these pithy words on Sep 20 09 at 6:13 pmAlthough I hate the breaks too, there’s actually a reason for those. If it says on the schedule that the bus will be at the airport at 7:45 pm (or whatever) then if it’s going by at 7:35 because they were going fast, they stop and wait there until the designated time. What drives me nuts is when they decide they’d rather take longer at the next point so they don’t stay. Then I miss my bus because it went by early.
Chris W added these pithy words on Sep 20 09 at 6:25 pmSounds like you have a regular route that you ride, so I’ll assume you haven’t used Google Maps for a while to plan a trip in Fresno. They do have the public transit tab for directions in Fresno. It gives route numbers, and you can even explore future departures. Best of all, since the iPhone map app is Google Map based, that same option works on the phone.
The transit option has been available for at least 4 months, I don’t ride the bus very often, and this has allowed me to avoid the FAX schedules that are just pdf’s of their routes.

I understand the catch up breaks. Those are understandable. I’m talking about the extended lunches and excessive late time. Like I mentioned, my bus was supposed to pick me up at 9:15AM and I usually am in the office around 9:35Am but that morning I didn’t even get to work until about 10:00AM. This has happened many times and it seems to be specific to some of the drivers. People can get in trouble for being that late it shouldn’t be acceptable for them to allow this without certain exceptions.
@Chris:
Thanks for that hint! This is exactly what I was talking about and last time I checked the FAX information wasn’t in there but I stopped riding the bus about 6 months ago and have just started again. I’m glad to see the transit information is now integrated into Google Maps. I guess the next step would be to integrate real time information to Google like for example if a bus is broke down on the route, you can see in the transit detail the departure gets reflected. But I’m not even sure if bigger cities like San Francisco even do this.
Adam added these pithy words on Sep 21 09 at 6:19 amI am a FAX employee, however this is not an official response. I am sorry you are experiencing difficulties riding the bus. I would like to assist you to make your bus riding experience better. Please provide details on the location, bus line etc. that you take in the morning. I will do anything I can to resolve the problem.

Thanks for the follow-up, I’m grateful some FAX employees actually listen up and care. I will make a note of the problem route I have usually. Would you mind if I reply back to you via email?
Adam added these pithy words on Sep 21 09 at 7:33 pmYes, that would be fine. Email me directly. I assume you have my email.
Thomas-Moffitt Stage added these pithy words on Dec 09 09 at 1:21 amOh, man, I feel your pain. I live on the Clovis borderlands, and so to get anywhere of any importance, I have to take the 45, which only comes every hour, at :15. Generally, I try to time it so that I end up with a particular driver whom I quite like and is generally good about being on time, however, sometimes it is unavoidable and I’ve got to get on a bus with someone who isn’t so timely.
Yes, I -LOVE- Switzerland for its public transportation. Absolutely love it. Problem is, Switzerland isn’t America, and it certainly isn’t Fresno (where most people don’t even realize there’s a world beyond our borders :/ how sad), which really disappoints me, since we could learn a lot from the Swiss. Real-time updates, breaks only when changing conductors. Unfortunately, we live in the land of the ignorant, and so we must suffer, at least for now.

Thanks for the comment. They actually worked with me on this issue and the couple of times I’ve rode since they were on time. Regarding the breaks I really don’t agree with them still but my general assumption is the FAX is union and the union pushes for them to take breaks on the routes as opposed to when they reach a transfer. Still, makes no sense and I don’t experience this issue in other metro cities.
Unhappy Rider added these pithy words on Mar 29 10 at 6:51 pmThere are other things that haven't been covered here. I am well aware of how they take breaks, and sometimes you miss your transfer. Another issue seems to be half baked routes. Example: Route 28 starts out like it is a Maroa bus. It goes well till it gets to Shields, then it makes a right turn towards Manchester, leaving about 4 miles of Maroa without any bus service. What is up with that? I have dubbed the bus 28 [The Maroa Wannabe] –Probably due to the unfortunate county island ahead. Bus 45 doesn't go straight down Ashlan to freeway 99 like it should. One day I needed the Ashlan bus at Hughes and Ashlan, but there is no 45 there. Service stops at Blackstone. Overly short crosstown/s, like bus 33 that turns at Maple. In my book, that is WAY too early to start turning when going east. No crosstown on Herndon despite many shopping centers. Clovis is just as clueless, not wanting FAX service. There is a possibility some of these issues will never be fixed, as Fresno FAX doesn't seem to get it.
robertschultz added these pithy words on Mar 29 10 at 7:12 pmI agree with you 100%. Some of their routes really make no sense and make it overly difficult for a rider. You should try giving them a call to express your complaint because from my dealing with FAX they are pretty good at listening to your concerns and taking them into consideration.
Unhappy Rider added these pithy words on Mar 30 10 at 10:33 pmI didn't even cover all the hald baked routes either. Another is route 20, Mckinley ave just covering from Blackstone to Hughes, and Chestnut ave service only going to Shields. Would make sense to keep going straight from Malaga, up Chestnut diagonal, and just go all the way to the new college. Lack of a bus going down Clovis ave is why my cousin doesn't take the bus to work. Takes too long, having to backtrack just to get some north route to go to where there is a crosstown. I blame Clovis for some of this, as Chestnut turns to Willow, and that is bordering Clovis. I have heard of Clovis not wanting any FAX buses in their town. It seems that they are making it as difficult as possible for the paying rider, like they are doing us a favor.
mary added these pithy words on Sep 10 10 at 10:27 amBreaks are necessary. Some drivers do not even get breaks because of overload of passengers and being behind schedule . I am just speaking of those drivers that try their best to keep the bus on schedule. Please cut them some slack. Many of the drivers enjoy their jobs and feel terrible when passengers waiting at the stops cannot be picked up due to a full bus.
Robert Schultz added these pithy words on Sep 10 10 at 11:01 amReally? Then why do I see so many times when a little 70 year old lady is 10 feet from the bus and the driver takes off? I even have seen them do that to disabled people. The fact is, some drivers are jerks and some aren't. I recognize the ones who aren't and love when they're my driver.
