My blog is back up, woot!

My blog has been down for a while because I was moving it. I recently been researching some options for virtual hosting environments. I came across Rackspace because I have used Rackspace over the years many times and also Robert Scoble is part of Rackspace and really supports it and I trust that guys word.

So after creating an account, I was amazed how unbelievably fast their site is at creating your virtual machine. They offer Windows hosting now (okay, it’s beta but still) which is what I am running my server on. The primary reason for this is because my applications that I will be eventually hosting are ASP.NET 4 applications so they need a windows server. Right now because Windows hosting is in beta I don’t get the backup support and so forth but that’s alright as I have all of my files and configurations being backed up to an Amazon S3 bucket.

So, my next challenge is to bring a couple other blogs I own over to this server which should be no problem. Oh yeah did I mention that within the control panel of your virtual server you can manage all of your domains with Rackspace? Makes it very easy to setup my domains and CNAMEs and MX records in one spot instead of with my registrar GoDaddy.

One of the things I been thinking about for this blog is how I can integrate music that I like, preferably lengthy music mixes like for electronic. Then I saw a post over on ReadWriteWeb last night regarding 18 Streaming Music Resources which was pretty comprehensive.

I tested a few of the services and although I have used Last.fm and Pandora for years now, I need something that integrates well into a blog utilizing a widget which Pandora and Last.fm do not do very well in my honest opinion. Here are the few I tried:

Imeem

Lala

SoundCloud

8tracks

Grooveshark

Out of all of these, I found SoundCloud to be the most comprehensive with the best catalog of electronic music. Note below how you get a nice looking widget as well as a spectrogram and even comments built right into the widget. This is great for when someone can’t identify a track within a mix. Only downside is if I wish to upload my own tracks I need to have a pro account which starts at $12/month USD for 15 uploads per month. Guess that ain’t bad.
